Stop undue influence of psychiatric drug approach. Support more non-drug mental health alternatives.
Key mental health consumer and psychiatric survivor leaders adopted the following statement, please support it:
Bastille Day 2010 Statement – Rockville, MD
14 July 2010
The Urgent Necessity for More Non-Drug Alternatives in Mental Health Care
We are alarmed about the over-reliance on psychiatric medication in mental health care because of the undue influence of the pharmaceutical industry. We see an urgent need for a far greater range of non-pharmaceutical mental health care.
We are participants in the USA Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) meeting, “Past, Present, and Future: SAMHSA Efforts to Promote Consumer/Survivor Inclusion.” We are…

The recovery message needs to go out far and wide
Recovery is a reality, as with so many other health situations. This message needs to be taught early in our schools and throughout our educational system. There should be op-eds broadcast far and wide in newspapers and on TV sending out this message of recovery and hope in order for social change to take place and to improve the negative and hopeless way of thinking which has been in place for so many, many years.

Insurance Co discriminate mental health diagnoses for long term disability by d/c benefits at 24 mth
It is so refreshing that mental health parity is here. So many years it was difficult to get quality care and the care was limited depending on what the insurance company wanted to pay.
Long term disability insurance is still discriminating against people with mental healh diagnoses by being allowed to discontinue peoples benefits at 24 months while benefits for physical illnesses have no limits or discontinue time.
The insurance companies have protection under federal ERISA laws. They also have a discretionary clause in their contracts that allows the insurance companies to basically decide on their own whether someone is…44 votes -

Understand why prior efforts have not successfully reduced stigma.
A recent study suggests that promoting the "brain disease" model has not reduced stigma. Research suggests it may increase stigma, perhaps because people infer that the individual then has not control over their behavior. In any case, before doing further work in this area its important to understand why past efforts have not been successful.

Increase public awareness of Psychiatric Service Dogs and their value.
Psychiatric Service Dogs allow people with MI to function as independently as possible. They are literally life savers. PSD ARE service dogs and their value needs to be publicized to the public, businesses, hospitals and families.

Divisions among the mental health community prevent progress- meds, alternative txt, psychotherapy
Not being an advocate for the mental health community for very long it is very apparent how the community can become divided.
Some people seem to feel so strongly about thier own experience that is clouds their judgement regarding the greater good of the whole mental health care movement.
Just because medications were not successful for you does not mean they are not successful for others. People need to respect that. The same with alternative therapies, psychotherapy and any other treatment.
If one loses the viewpoint of compassion for their peer who may need medication than the

dedicate funding to support state behavioral health public information and outreach
The limited funding that does exist for state behavioral health programs must be used to meet overwhelming demand for treatment services. Public information and outreach efforts therefore have limited access to necessary funding supports, yet these services are vital to linking consumers to care, overcoming public stigma and advancing understanding that would altimately lead to increased behavioral health funding.

Clarify the reasons why MH Clients Die 25 years earlier than the general population. Psych Drugs?
Is it the focus on Psychiatric Drugs as first line to treatment that is causing MH Clients to die 25 years earlier than the general population? Are Mental Health Clients "Human Guinea Pigs" for the unjust enrichment of the Pharmaceutical Industry and their professional and non-profit organization collaborators?
