Stop undue influence of psychiatric drug companies: More non-drug mental health alternatives!
Key mental health consumer and psychiatric survivor leaders endorsed the following statement at a SAMHSA summit. Please support this urgent call:
Bastille Day 2010 Statement – Rockville, MD
14 July 2010
The Urgent Necessity for More Non-Drug Alternatives in Mental Health Care
We are alarmed about the over-reliance on psychiatric medication in mental health care because of the undue influence of the pharmaceutical industry. We see an urgent need for a far greater range of non-pharmaceutical mental health care.
We are participants in the USA Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) meeting, “Past, Present, and Future: SAMHSA Efforts…

Consumers/survivors need to be involved in decision making at every level of healthcare policy
Consumer/survivors need to be involved at every level in the policy making. There needs to be an emphasis on holistic approaches to wellness and recovery, making use of the arts, music, and exercise over the use of medications. Recovery must be taught early and often in our schools for significant social change to take place. And there must be powerful op-eds written in newspapers around the country sending this recovery message out.

Create parity for mental illness, including substance use disorders, as any other medical condition.
Parity would mean the same process for prior authorizations and phone numbers as any other medical condition. There should not be separate numbers to call or separate benefits/limits for substance use disorders or mental illness. It should all be under medical. Any medical provider should be able to treat or bill for substance abuse/mental health services. It should be all under one umbrella. It would reduce stigma and open up more treatment opportunities.

Ban involuntary electroconvulsive therapy (ECT or 'electroshock') over the wishes of the subject.
Many Americans are not aware that some individuals are administered involuntary electroshock (also known as electroconvulsive therapy or ECT) over their expressed wishes.
Most people sign voluntarily for their procedure (and this can still be a problem with flawed informed consent and not being offered alternatives).
However, this 'idea' is very simple: Ban federal funding for involuntary electroshock over the expressed wishes of the subject. Note I am not talking here about an individual who is mute or non-responsive (while of course they too should be free of intrusive controversial irreversible procedures).
No, this idea is very focused: When an…

Focus on Brain Research
I do not understand the lack of resources focusing on brain research. It seems to be the most complex and important human organ, yet the least is known of it.
The money spent on research could affect so many neurological problems.Alzheimers, Huningtons disease, Parkinsons disease, MS, Brain tumors, Autism, Schizophrenica, Bipolar, Depression, Sensory disorders, ADHD, Tourettes syndrome, dementia, Reyes disease
With all these devastating illnesses why isn't there more funding for brain research?

Explore and promote behavioral health parity for Medicare and Medicaid.
Medicaid and Medicare should offer the same behavioral health benefits. In fact, why not integrate the two systems into one public healthcare system? Think of the money that could be saved in administrative costs!

Shared Decision Making here
Person centered planning is a cornerstone of health reform, and shared decion-making, a mechanism for achieving person centeredness, should be in this category, not #8..

SAMSHA speak of 30 Centers of Excellence for Bipolar and Depr. so consumers can contact legislators
These specialized hospitals need funding.
Federal funding is unprecedented for mental health. No one is discussing this provision in the media so people can not write letters to their Senators and Represenatives for the next 5 years to ask for funding.
This program is for 5 years and the funding takes place in July. This past July 10 million dollars out of 100 million dollars was appropriated.Do we in the mental health community feel
ok with passing up a possible 90 million dollars for treatment and research. Especially with the drastic state cuts in mental health programs.

Fully fund intensive psychotherapy
Relationship-based, psychodynamically-informed open-ended psychotherapy has been shown time and again to SAVE health care dollars in the long run, resulting in fewer ER visits and hospitalizations, better self-care, and better use of other health care resources.

Identifies best practices and barriers to bring physical health care into behavioral Health settings
There are clearly people out there that will want to have their behavioral heath provider be their medical home. To do this BH will need to bring physical health providers into our settings. We need to learn what are the best ways to do this, hurdles to doing this, how to get paid to do it, and the clinical implications.

Incorpate specific focus on services and supports for children and youth
Health care reform offers an opportunity to broaden the array of covered services and supports for children, youth, young adults and their families. Traditional services have proven both costly and yield questionable outcomes. Health care reform should be used to ensure that a broad array of individualized services and supports can be provided to children and youth with behavioral health challenges and their families.
