Articulate consumer and survivor inclusion and leadership in all SAMHSA initiatives as a priority!
Unlike the President's Freedom Commission Report (2003) where consumer, survivor and family inclusion, voice and leadership was stated as a goal, the SAMHSA strategic initiatives are void of this important perspective. Let's not marginalize this very important group of experts and include them into the SAMHSA strategic initiatives. Make this a stated affirmation!

I recall a time when medications prevented me from being able to hold a pencil. I was inpatient and wanted to write a letter to my father, but was not able to write anything. That was a very frightening experience. I am not 100% against the use of medication, However the service providers need to embrace the recovery model and allow the voice of the individual being treated to hold as much weight as any of the other treatment team members. Medication should not become more deadlier than the mental illness it claims to treat!

I remember my drug induced days, telling docs I was over medicated and driving to work every day higher than a kite, they upped the doses till said I said no more and signed a release agreement. If your credibility is destroyed- no one listens to your cries of almost OD-ing on meds. I have been much better off the meds. Safer for the roads, how many people are over medicated on the roads?qt

It's unbelievable to not include those being acted upon in the strategic planning of initiatives. Are you from another planet?? The entire mental health system is moving toward inclusion at ALL levels, but SAMHSA does not see the need??? Shocking!!

Yes, please include consumers and survivors in all SAMHSA initiatives. Also please include those who are often marginalized by the marginalized — immigrants, limited-English proficient, multi-cultural, bi-cultural, and multi-lingual. Please ensure that the consumers you select are representative of the diversity of the people who comprise the American consumer/survivor population.
