The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

SAMHSA Stakeholder Feedback

I suggest SAMHSA...

evidence based practice

More mental health services are being provided by social workers than any other discipline; however, our universities are not adequately preparing MSW's to implement evidence-based practice. SAMHSA should encourage university schools of social work to ensure that MSW's graduate with the knowledge and skills to implement evidence-based practice. They should also work with CSWE to include this in accreditation standards.

Social workers are not necessarily prepared to be counselors. Those who are not should not be permitted, because of their degree, to provide services to clients. I have know many recovering people--with lot's of personal evidence--who knew more about counseling and prevention than any associate or bachelor (sometimes even masters or doctoral) degreed individuals. Remember an outcome study that showed it is not whether the person is in recovery or is educated that helps the substance abuser--it is the client's perception of who can help that makes the outcome important based on matching client with recoverying or educated counselor!!!
