this is especially important since eating disorders do have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses, yet so many doctors and mental health professionals are terribly under-educated about the reality and severity of eating disorders. FREQUENTLY people are discharged prematurely from the ER b/c doctors are not properly educated about the effects of dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, purging, etc. on the body. All too frequently, because of a lack of education currently available to professionals treating those suffering from eating disorders, those with eating disorders are told to "just eat" or "stop purging". One of the reasons eating disorders have the highest mortality rate (up to 20%) is because the lack of proper treatment they receive...as well as suicide. Upwards of 50% of those with anorexia also abuse alcohol...so prevention of eating disorders makes sense to be a natural inclusion in prevention efforts.
