Fund models for integrated co-occuring disorder treatment in jails and prisons
SAMHSA has provided significant resources on integrated care in the community. Yet, the correctional industry is far behind and most substance abuse treatment behind bars utilizes the traditional therapeutic community approach which lacks the individualized mental health supports needed by many who are incarcerated. New demonstration projects should be encouraged across the country that incorporate this evidence-based practice for the largest population of institutionalized mental health consumers, those cycling through jail and prison.
