SAMHSA Stakeholder Feedback

What do you think are some of the most noteworthy accomplishments and changes in the behavioral health field over the past several years?

System Transformation and Peer to Peer Support

I am a CPS where I received services for D&A and MH challenges. Life has never been so fulfilling and rewarding as it is for me today. The System Transformation has been a blessing to me and so many others. I have gone on to get my CRS certification and am now enrolled at CCP. I am also a Parent Support Specialist at the NET where my son received services. Today I have a voice and am heard!!!!!!

I am a CPRP working with an amazing peer group . Here what the peers think of the Peer Approach:

There is the support of a friend who may or may not ‘get it”.

There is the support of family members and sometimes that is great and sometimes it’s being the identified sick one.

There is the support of case managers, and social workers and doctors and nurses…and it matters, .

There is the support of a church community and that is awesome when there is a good connect.

        THEN

There is the support of a Peer group.

There are few other places where the acceptance is unconditional.
        Stigma does not exist.
There are fewer places that mistakes become lessons and problems become roads to solutions.
Part of our success is because we care …about each other, we learn from one another, we laugh together we learn that we can laugh at ourselves.
We’ve been empowered to take steps, we may have avoided if the steps were “should directives”
There is no larger motivator then to feel so connected to a group that often you take steps just because you know they are rooting for you.
Its clear that the human spirit is more motivated through the buddy system in many areas of life and we are proving that the connections and the support are as important as all the other tools.
