SAMHSA Stakeholder Feedback

Tell us your views on the 10 guiding principles of recovery? What do you like about the principles, and what changes do you suggest?

Ignores the fact that diseases need treatment

The principles are merely a guide to healthy living for EVERYONE, but say very little about the fact that severe mental illness are biological and demand at minimum medical treatment as well as counseling and essentials such as secure housing that are necessary to management of any illness. Thousands of people lack most or all of these; they should be SAMHSA's priority.

it is not samhsas's responsibility to house people. that would be a HUD concern. if the recovery movement is to take hold, we need business savvy too.

Darby Penney, If you are not mentally ill, please remove yourself from the system so there is enough money to treat the mentally ill.

I had an acquaintance who claimed to have been sexually abused as a youngster, but she said it was worth it since she could go on disability and not have to work. At one time, she was seeing three or four therapists at one time, but, I who was working, could not afford to see any.

Now I am beginning to understand who you people are.

I don't have a "disease," I'm a trauma survivor, as are most people in the system.
