recovered
I am concerned that the definition of recovery as written implies that people can participate in a process of recovering but never actually recover. I am a member of Recovery International; the oldest peer led mental health organization in the country. I know from my own experience and that of many others in my organization that people do recover from mental illness. We move from being patients who cannot control one or more aspects of our daily lives to individuals who function as well as, and often better than, people who have never suffered from a mental illness. We do…

Shame on those who qualify care with medical terms when it is really about the money.
As a tax payer, (and remember, even the mentally ill pay taxes every time they purchase anything or anything is purchased on their behalf) if I had a mental illness I would want to be individually diagnosed and personally supervised through the length of my illness, even it it means my whole life. Not taking complete care of the metal ill is writing an embarrassing chapter in American history.

What about medical treatment?
Thsi definition leaves out the place of medical/behavioral treatment out. This is a crucial part of recovery. Also, patients suffering from substance use disorders might need to be on medications assisted therapy and it would be important to make the case that abstinence is abstinence from illicit/non prescribed drugs.

Not only "change"
In the definition of recovery, only change is mentioned. It seems to imply that the person has never been in a stable place. Many patients were in a very stable place before their illness and recovery might mean to get back to that place.

"Recovery" or "rehabilitation" applies only to substance abuse". Mental disorders require adaptation

Addiction and Mental illness are chronic diseases and can be in remission but rarely recovered.
We do not recover from diabetics we are treated and we continue to be treated. We learn to live with our disease and can be empowered by treatment so we live a full and active life.
If we keep talking about recovery it perpetrates the myth that those with mental illness and the disease of addiction can just pull themselves together by grabbing hold of their boot straps and getting over it.
To treat a chronic disease we do need the all that is in…10 votes -
Recovery from substance abuse is quitting. Recovery from MI is coping, struggling, accepting.
People with mental illness may use substances to dumb their mental illness, and folks can have mental illness without substance abuse and become alcoholics with mental illness. One can wake up and never drink again, but you can not wake up and quit having a mental illness.

Holistic Recover from AODA Counselor perspective
Recovery is about assisting person to regain health and transition (while still healing) back into society, family and community. It is not only to be launched with hope but encouragement to allow individuals to create balance in an unbalanced life. Holistically to aid in the understanding of physical, spiritual, mental and emotional healing. As a recovering person from Cancer, I have found recovery involves a new found value, joy and inspiration of life itself. It also involives accepting that we must let go of the "wishes" we had growing up, recreating and revising those wishes for ourselves. Re-evaluating what is…

Recovery is a self defined process
When asked, peer and family members defined recovery as a personal journey that consists of fulfilling an array of personal goals that lead to a better quality of life, through this journey or process, an individual gains self-sufficiency, productivity, and independence. Peer and family members described recovery as a multifaceted process, because it entails fulfilling goals in several aspects of a person’s life, such as improving physical and mental health, gaining or restoring relationships, furthering education or vocational skills, improving living arrangements and gaining employment. Therefore, each person experiences recovery differently, or as one member noted “it is self-defined.”
