The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

SAMHSA Stakeholder Feedback

Tell us your views on the working definition of recovery from mental and substance use disorders. What do you like about the definition, and what changes do you suggest?

…if addicted live a sober life, with self-directed choices and goals…

The definition is complicated by the fact that some people have both addiction and mental illness, and some people have only one or the other. If addicted sobriety is the foundation of recovery. If one has a mental health disorder but is not addicted sobriety is helpful, but not required. However all who have experienced loss of personal power, the reclaiming of self-direction, choice and freedom are essential.
